National Disability Athletics Championships at University of Warwick
The National Disabilty Junior Athletics Finals at the University of Warwick this
weekend saw local athletes produce unprecedented results. There have been
medalists and National Champions before but never four athletes returning with
such great results.
Sisters Shannon and Libby Dover set the standard on the first race of Saturday
by clinching gold and silver which they were to repeat the following day in the
u14 1500 metres.Libby added to her silver collection by coming second whilst on
Sunday Shannon went one better to complete a hat trick of golds.Declan Brooks
not to be outdone also won gold in the u16 800m.He claimed a silver in the High
jump and then on Sunday bronze in the long jump.
Brandon Gee showed the spirit of CP athletes by getting silver in both 100 and
200m in the T38 class. He finished by taking Gold in the Long jump. The importance
of regular training cannot be overemphasised as two of them beat rivals who had
beaten them in April.Shannon,Libby and Declan all train with Diane Modahl at
Sport City whilst Brandon has joined Eddie Shaw at East Cheshire Harriers. All
pupils at Samuel Laycock are taught Athletics and encouraged to join community
clubs in their favourite sports. The Laycock way was noticed by others, don't
stress or worry just train as well as you can, enjoy it and thank others at the
end whatever the outcome.
Brandon Gee was chosen to collect the trophy on behalf of the North West.Anyone
wishing to get involved in Disabilty Athletics should get with Shelly Holroyd at
in touch England Athletics or ask at your local club.
